  • This exchange is from my FB page. I can't seem to get the formatting where it needs to be or correct some of the absences. This whole attitude that it's up to thw woman to not get pregnant. Reminds me a some problems Portland had a generation or so ago. 

  
  
• The Sandy Blvd. neighborhood was "mixed use" at the time. In other words small businesses and the world's oldeset, so they say,profession. Trouble is when some guys came cruising, in the middle of the day, they weren't too choosy about their targets. If that person on their break or lunch = was female she was fair game at far as they were concerned. 

In fact the attitude seemed to be that the intended target shoud be flattered to be the CHOSEN. She could say no until she turned blue and/or ducked into the nearet building. It was no means maybe, maybe means yes and yes means get it on. It's been at least two decades and I forget how the problem was finally solved.

THE GANG THAT REALLY COULDN'T SHOOT STRAIGHT

 I haven't dropped off the face of the earth but this elecrtion would try the patience of a saint. And I am no saint. On the up side my kid sister's middle son just welcomed a son into this chancy world. And I am sure that mom is smiling. 

 So. Most of the news services, including Fox, have called the election for Joe Biden. Joe, just plain Joe who has a wife who hopes to keep teaching, two dogs and I don't know how many grand children. His eyes smile even when he isn't smiling. He can give a whole short speech and actually make sense. He appears to be ready to hit the ground running with little or no help from our soon to be ex president. My opinion is my own and my blood pressure won't take a full tirade. Use imaginations. Look up Shakespearean cursing. 

What has #45 been doing during the last ten days? Playing golf, nothing new in that, Over one hundred members of his security detail are quarantined. Members of his staff are testing positive. His rallies have been described as super spreader events. The virus is escalating. As of next Wednesday Oregon goes back to full lock down. 

What else has he been doing. Tweeting. Watching the new super conservative, conspiracy spreading "news" service, One America News Network, having his lawyers file lawsuits that get tossed almost before the judge sees them, and trying to find ways to hijack the electoral college. The briefly floated idea would have legislatures controlled by the Republicans throw out the votes and send a slate of electors loyal to Trump no matter what the votes cast say.

The idea seems to have died aborning, probably for several reasons. First you don't change rules after the game is played. You want to try to change the rules for the next election? Go for it. You're likely to find that members of your party at the state level are not in lockstep with the national party. And almost none of the so called swing states are in the south. 

This has probably been the most honest election in the history of the country. Almost no cases of real fraud. Some glitches in counting, but those were corrected almost immediately. One set of affadavits in a Michigan suit included the statement that he couldn't understand why "so many members of the armed forces didn't vote for #45. You make the veterans health care system worse than it already is, call our service men and women suckers and losers, and worst of all can't seem to understand that our governement is not allowed to unleash our armed forces on our own people. 

"You didn't vote for me so screw you" seems to the the message for the day. We're all shadowy extras in the movie titled "The Life of Trump." He was screaming "I've been robbed" almost before the polls closed. He's still screaming it and his base is eating it up. We're probably fortunate that this bunch is a bunch of basically, inept, incompetants. Can you imagine where we'd be if they had realized that another stimulus package and some effort to control the virus would probably gotten him reelected no matter how well organized those supporting Biden were. 

Steve Bannon was no help. Imagining in public that putting Dr. Fauci's head on a pike next to the White House might be a Good Thing. After all it worked for Henry VIII. Not really. When Christina of Denmark was approached with a marriage proposal, wife number four, she is reported to have ramarked that she would say yes. If she had two necks. And Sir Thomas More became a saint.

WHEN IT WAS SINK OR SWIM

 This bright (I hope) idea is going to take more than one post. The US didn't have social media during WWII. This is probably a good thing. One of the few topics I remember from my college level US history class, circa about 1970, was that the US didn't really need rationing during WWII. That it was more to bring the country together than a real necessity. I thought my instructors were full of it then and I still do. 

"Mandating that I wear a mask is a violation of my civil rights!" I still am not sure how we ended up here with this attitudte. Can you imagine Sturm and Drang if this attitude had been prevalent during WWII. Let's start with tires. Tire sales were halted on December 11, 1941. Rubber came from SE Asia. And those countries rapidly fell to advancing Japanese armies. Synthetic rubber was available but production capacity was nowhere near demand. Especially with rubber needed for war production. Once the rationing system was set up regions were allocated available tires based on vehicle registrations numbers. 

A national speed limit of 35 mph was instituted as much to conserve rubber as gasoline. You had to apply for a gas card and when you applied you had to admit how many tires you owned. You were allowed five. More than five? You turned them over to the government. The Wickipedia article didn't specify if this was outright confiscation or if you were paid for them. Heck these were the days when most folks only owned one car anyway. You received a sticker for your car. The type of sticker identified how much gasoline you were allowed per week. And you were expected to limit your driving to essentials, Sight seeing was discouraged. Then, as now, so many folks tried to get around the rules tht special courts were set up to deal with the scofflaws. 

An A sticker was the lowest priority and entitled the holder to three or four US gallons per week. B stickers were issued civilians working in industries vital to the war effort and entitled you to up to eight gallons per week. C stickers were issued to individuals considered extremely vital such as doctors. Article didn't specify how much fuel they were able to purchase. An X sticker was avaiable for clergy, fire and police departments and civil defense workers. Probably for official vehicles rather than individual vehicles. 

Can you imagine the fire works if Americans living today were told how many tires they could buy (if any), how much fuel they could buy, how far they could drive. You could hear the screams out beyond the Oort Cloud. Oh, and you could pretty much forget about buying a new car. There were approximately  a half million unsold cars when sales were haulted on January 1, 1942. When sales resumed sale was limited to doctors, clergy and I would imagine police, fire departments and civil defense units.

 Industrial capacity was ramped up for war production. Remember the US was not only preparing to arm US troops but we were preparing to supply equipment to Britain and the USSR. Thanks to the U boat wolf packs it was the middle of 1943 before the convoys delivered more cargo to our allied than was lost at sea.
